The Central Coast Conservatorium is delighted to be teaming up with the Australian Haydn Ensemble (AHE) to bring its inaugural regional NSW Spring Academy to Gosford from September 28-30.
The Australian Haydn Ensemble will be running its Australian Hayden Academy with the Central Coast Conservatorium in the September school holidays.
The AHE is committed to creating engaging experiences for young and emerging musicians in both regional NSW and metropolitan areas. Over the three days, AHE musicians will join forces with students for the Academy where they will explore the gems of the baroque and classical repertoire, elements of historically informed practice and period instrument practice.
“This is a unique opportunity to explore the music, stylistic approaches and technique as well as the instruments from the baroque and classical periods and also for members of the Central Coast community to hear these world-class performers here in Gosford,” said Central Coast Conservatorium Artistic Director, Patrick Brennan.
The Academy is open to violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, bassoon, horn, oboe, trumpet and keyboard (harpsichordists welcome!) students from all over Australia and has two streams.
Stream One is the main Australian Haydn Academy Orchestral Course – an intensive youth orchestra experience for high school students exploring music of the baroque and classical eras. The main orchestral group will perform on modern instruments at A440 pitch. Students will have the opportunity to try playing on gut strings and use baroque/classical bows as part of the experience. It is recommended applicants be a minimum Grade 6 AMEB or equivalent and above for this stream.
Stream Two is for advanced students at tertiary or early stage professional level who have some knowledge of period instruments, or have been studying period instrument performance.
These students will be invited to join the Australian Haydn Youth Ensemble to form an ensemble on period instruments with AHE principals.
All participants will have the chance to play alongside and perform with the members of the Australian Haydn Ensemble throughout the course and at the culminating concert performance in Gosford on 30 September.
The repertoire will include selections from:
PURCELL – The Fairy Queen & King Arthur
HANDEL & CORELLI Concerto Grossi
TELEMANN Orchestral Suites
BACH Orchestral Suites
Final repertoire choices will be made based on the level and scope of applications.
As part of the course, students will have the opportunity to participate in solo instrumental masterclasses on repertoire of their choice. It is recommended that students present a piece from the baroque or classical era to take advantage of AHE’s specialist knowledge in historical performance practice. (e.g. Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli, Haydn, Mozart). As part of the advanced preparation material, students will be provided with listening lists with recommended recordings that give examples of historically informed interpretations.
Other workshops will include:
Baroque bassoonist and dance specialist Simon Rickard will deliver three baroque dance workshops during the course. Students will learn about the different baroque dances that the music they play is based on, learn the steps and also have the chance to become a baroque band member, accompanying the group during the sessions.
Leading Australian baroque violinist Stephen Freeman will lead several Alexander Technique sessions during the course; students will learn how freedom of movement can enhance their performance.
The course will also include sessions on historical instruments, string and wind techniques and historical performance practice with Artistic Director Skye McIntosh and other members of the Ensemble. Further details of these sessions will be released closer to the time of the course.
